ZEZURU FURNITURE
2017
ZEZURU is my first collaboration with the Botswana-based furniture brand Mabeo. Comprised of a chair, a storage cabinet and an occasional table, the collection is the result of a collaborative process between Mabeo wood craftspeople and Zezuru metal craftspeople in Botswana. A later addition to the series was a server, launched during Milan Design Week 2018.
Marrying wood with galvanised metal, each object is not only made from the two distinct materials, but from two very distinct craft techniques. Hand cut, hammered, shaped and folded, galvanised metal sheet components are inserted into or suspended on the wooden components. Pairing these reflective galvanised metal components — with their visible hammer marks — with smoothly handcrafted wood forms results in highly contrasted pieces.
